19 Feb 10 Setting File or Directory Permissions

You may tweak the permissions of various files/folders in your website, from the File Manager interface. This can be achieved by following the process described below:

1. Select one or more files/directories and click on the Chmod button.

2. You have two options to set the permissions of a file/folder. Click here to understand various File Permissions and different Groups of users >>

a. Set common permissions of all files/folders

i. Select the Read, Write, Execute permissions for the groups – Owner, Group, Everyone.

ii. If you have selected multiple files/folders, then you need to click on the Set all permissions button to set these permissions for all.

b. Individually select the permissions of each file/folder

You can set permissions to files/directories individually by selecting the appropriate check boxes provided for each file/directory. Alternatively, if you know the numeric value of the file permissions, you may enter the same in the textbox adjacent to Chmod value.

Note: If you are setting the permission for a directory, you can choose to set the same permission to all the files/subdirectories within that directory by selecting the check box adjacent to Chmod also the files within this directory or/and Chmod also the subdirectories within this directory.

3. Click filemanager02 Setting File or Directory Permissions to submit the permissions.
IMPORTANT

Be extremely careful when modifying the file/directory permissions, as it may lead to website visitors either not being able to view a particular file or worse have read/write/execute access to a file that you may not have wished to grant.

If you feel you have erred, you may either seek expert advise or simply delete and re-upload the original file/folder (after taking a backup of the current file/folder).
