Gossimer’s Premier Web Hosting and Domain Registration Knowledgebase.
Gossimer sells four types of thawte Digital Certificates - 1. SGC SuperCert The Server Gated Cryptography (SGC) digital certificate is our premium SSL certificate, providing the highest possible protection in all circumstances. The SGC SuperCert offers 256-bit encryption in all browsers (released after Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x or Netscape 4.06). In older-browsers it ensures a minimum of 128-bit encryption to 99.9% of all users, even if the user’s browser supports only 40-bit or 56-bit encryption. Who needs an SGC SuperCert? You need an SGC SuperCert instead of our Web Server Certificate, if any of the following are true for your business:
- You have an International (non-US) audience/customer-base, or/and
- You need to provide the highest possible encryption for each and every visitor to your website, or/and
- You conduct medium to high-value e-commerce transactions via your web interface.

If you do not wish to use a specialized FTP client, you can also use your web browser to upload/download/delete your files. Follow the process mentioned below to do so:
IMPORTANT
The process demonstrated below is common to all web browsers. We have here chosen Microsoft Internet Explorer browser to explain the same.
1. In the browser address bar, type: (ftp://username:password@yourdomainname.com). Type it without the parenthesis and customize the information, such that
- username -> Your FTP username
- password -> Your FTP password
- yourdomainname.com -> your domain name
Press enter.

2. Once connected, double-click the folder to which you wish to upload the files, to open it.

3. Open another explorer window and go to the folder where your html files (that you want to upload) are located. Click and drag the files to upload from the explorer window to the Internet Explorer window that is showing web. The files will be uploaded.

DSN is an abbreviation for Data Source Name. Data Source Name is a parameter that stores Data Source information (which includes the source of data such as relational database, and the connectivity information for accessing the data). The primary purpose of the DSN is to provide connectivity to a database through an ODBC driver.
What is ODBC?
ODBC stands for Open Data-Base Connectivity. This is a method developed for accessing databases, particularly with the intention of making it possible to access the data in them from any application. Thus, it works independent of the Database Management System (DBMS) that is used to maintain the database.
The Data Source information stored in the DSN typically consists of
- the database name,
- directory,
- the database driver,
- a UserID,
- its password, and
- any other essential information
DSNs are particularly useful for retrieving data from your databases to display on your website. Once you create a DSN for your database, you can use the DSN in your website to retrieve and display that information on your database.
You may connect to a database even without creating a DSN, by using a DSN-less connection. The only change is use of a Connection String in place of a rather easy to remember DSN.
Advantages of using a DSN Connection string over a DSN-less connection string
- Provides easy to remember data source names.
- When there are lots of data sources to use and you want a central repository to hold the collection of data sources without having to worry about the actual site and configuration of the data sources.
Sample of a DSN Connection String
<%
Dim con
Set con = Server.CreateObject(“ADODB.Connection”)
con.Open “DSN=mydsn”
‘ Now database is open and we are connected
con.Close
‘We are done so we’ve closed the connection above
Set con = Nothing
%>
There is only a singular advantage of using a DSN-less Connection string instead of a DSN connection string – database access becomes much faster since DSN-less connections use native OLE DB providers, while DSN connections make use of ODBC drivers.
Sample of a DSN-less Connection String
Access database
<%
set cnn = server.createobject(“ADODB.Connection”)
cnn.open “PROVIDER=MICROSOFT.JET.OLEDB.4.0;DATA SOURCE=c:anydatabase.mdb”
%>
Note: In the above example, C:anydatabase needs to be replaced with the actual physical path to the database on the website.
How to construct a DSN-less connection string for Access and SQL Server Databases?
Access Database
With native OLE DB Provider (preferred)
Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=c:pathtodatabase.mdb
Using ODBC connection
Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)}; DBQ=c:pathtodatabase.mdb
Always use the connection string that uses native OLE DB provider because it is faster than the ODBC method of connecting. Data Source or DBQ are the absolute path to the database. If you have a relative path, then you can obtain the absolute path by using Server.MapPath(“/relative/path/to/database.mdb”).
Example
Dim conStr
Set conStr = “Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=” & _
Server.MapPath(“/dbo/database.mdb”)
SQL Server Database
With native OLE DB Provider (preferred)Provider=SQLOLEDB; Data Source=server_name; Initial Catalog=database_name; User Id=user_name; Password=user_password
Using ODBC Provider
Driver={SQL Server}; Server=server_name; Database=database_name; UID=user_name; PWD=user_password

IMPORTANT
Effective from 15 November 2007, all databases (MS SQL) purchased on Gossimer Windows Hosting Servers will be created on MS SQL 2005 Servers. There exists a backward compatibility issue with SQL 2005 in restoring a database to SQL 2000 (or an earlier version of MS SQL). This is on account of Microsoft not providing backward compatibility with earlier versions of MS SQL due to different internal file structures.
An alternate method would be usage of MS SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard. MS SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard enables the deployment of SQL Server databases either into 2000 or 2005 hosting environment. It generates a single SQL script file which can be used to recreate a database (both schema and data) for SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 versions. Click here to download this tool >>

Originally known as Active Messaging, the Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) library allows users to send mails through ASP Scripts.
Collaboration Data Objects (CDO) is Microsoft’s technology for building messaging or collaboration applications or adding these capabilities to existing applications. Part of the Microsoft Exchange Server product, CDO has evolved from what Microsoft formerly called Object Linking and Embedding Messaging and, more recently, Active Messaging.
You can use the sample script provided by Gossimer and tweak it a bit to your requirements, to accept feedback from your website visitors and get the results emailed to you.
You would need to change the Email address in the field objCDOSYSMail. From to any Email address on the domain name on which you are incorporating the script. For example, if your Domain Name is abc.com, then you would define the From Email address as some-name@abc.com. This Email address need not be existing on the Mail Server of abc.com, however, the domain name in the objCDOSYSMail. From has to be yours. You may use an Email address such as Do_Not_reply@abc.com.
The Email address in the objCDOSYSMail. To field needs to be changed to your Email address, where you wish to receive Emails submitted through the form.
Sample Script
<%
set objCDOSYSMail = Server.CreateObject(“CDO.Message”)
set objCDOSYSCon = Server.CreateObject(“CDO.Configuration”)
‘Out going SMTP server
objCDOSYSCon.Fields(“http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/smtpserverport”)= 25
objCDOSYSCon.Fields(“http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/smtpconnectiontimeout”)= 60
objCDOSYSCon.Fields.Update
‘Update the CDOSYS Configuration
Set objCDOSYSMail.Configuration = objCDOSYSCon
objCDOSYSMail.From = “some-name@abc.com”
objCDOSYSMail.To = “xyz@abc.com”
objCDOSYSMail.Subject = “Test mail”
objCDOSYSMail.TextBody = “Test Mail”
objCDOSYSMail.Send
Set objCDOSYSMail = Nothing
Set objCDOSYSCon = Nothing
If Err <> 0 Then
Err_Msg = Err_Msg & “<li>Your request was not sent due to the following error: “& Err.Description & “</li>”
End if
%>
IMPORTANT
The body of the mail should not have bare linefeeds (n). If a bare linefeed is detected, the SMTP service of Microsoft IIS6 (the Web Server running on Gossimer’s Windows servers) will stop delivering any mail and the mails will get struck in the SMTP queue. This is because Microsoft IIS6 strictly follows Internet e-mail standards; and these standards forbid the presence of bare linefeed characters in e-mail messages. Click here for more details >>
For example,
objCDOSYSMail.TextBody = “Thank you for contacting us. We shall get back to you shortly.nKind regardsnabc.com“
In the above case, bare linefeeds (n) are being used.
Instead of n, you need to use rn (carriage-return, line-feed). Hence, the correct usage would be -
objCDOSYSMail.TextBody = “Thank you for contacting us. We shall get back to you shortly.rnKind regardsrnabc.com“

In order to use your Live Chat Service, you need to download and install the Agent module software. This software connects your support Operators to the Live Help client.
IMPORTANT
1. This software requires Microsoft .NET runtime to be installed on your machine. If you do not have it, download the same from http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/a/c/aac39226-8825-44ce-90e3-bf8203e74006/dotnetfx.exe.
2. Ports in the range 37643 to 37648 need to be enabled/opened for the following to work:
i. Live Chat Agent software – If this software is installed on a computer that is behind a Firewall or Proxy Server, then you need to request your System Administrator to enable/open these ports for you.
If you are connected to the Internet via a Cable/DSL ISP, then you need to contact your ISP and request them to enable these for you. Typically, Dial-up Internet users do not face port blocking issues and would not have to request their ISP for enabling these ports.
ii. Live Chat code for your website – If the web server where your website is hosted (which has the LivehelpGenie Live Chat code installed) behind a Firewall, then you need to request your Web Hosting Provider to enable/open these ports for you.
To download the software, follow the steps mentioned below:

Once you have paid for your Digital Certificate Order, your order becomes Active within the system. However, you need to complete the Certificate Enrollment Process, before the certificate can be issued to you.
IMPORTANT
You need to successfully Enroll your Digital Certificate within 5 days, since the date this Order became Active. In the event that you do not complete your Enrollment process within this period your Digital Certificate Order will get automatically Cancelled and you would receive a refund.
Follow the instructions mentioned below to get your digital certificate issued:
Step 1. Generate a Private Key and Certificate Signature Request (CSR) from your web server
Before you can begin the process of obtaining a Certificate, you must generate a minimum of 1024-bit Private Key and CSR pair, off your web server.
A CSR is basically a Public Key that you generate on your server that validates the computer-specific information about your web server and Organization when you request a Certificate from thawte.
Digital ID’s make use of a technology called Public Key Cryptography, which uses Public and Private Key files.
The Public Key, also known as a Certificate Signature Request (CSR), is the key that will be sent to thawte. The CSR that you generate must be signed by atleast a 1024-bit Private Key (thawte will not accept a lower encryption level CSR than 1024-bit).
The Private Key will remain on the server and should never be released into the public. thawte does not have access to your Private Key. It is generated locally on your server and is never transmitted to thawte. The integrity of your Digital ID depends on your private key being controlled exclusively by you.
A CSR cannot be generated without generating a Private Key file nor can the Private Key file be generated without generating a CSR file. In certain web server software platforms like Microsoft IIS, both are generated simultaneously through the Wizard on the web server.
Typically, you will be prompted to enter the following information about your Organization in order to generate the Private Key and CSR (Public Key) pair off the web server:
- Organization Name
- Organizational unit – This maybe either a Sole Proprietorship, Trading As, University Department, University Administration, Government Department, Doing Business As, University Faculty, Public (Listed) Company, Private (Unlisted) Company, Registered Non Profit Organization, Non-Government Organization, Interest Group, Registered Charity.
- Country Code
- State or Province
- Locality
- – This is the name that distinguishes the Certificate best, and ties it to your Organization. Here you need to enter your exact host and domain name that you wish to secure. This may also be the root server or intranet name for your Organization. For example,a. if you wish to secure www.yourdomain.com, then you need to enter www.yourdomain.com as the Common Name. If you just enter yourdomain.com as the Common Name (without the host www), then the Certificate will only get issued to yourdomain.com. Similarly, if you need to secure pay.yourdomain.com, then you need to mention the Common Name as pay.yourdomain.com. b. if you are buying a Wildcard Server Certificate for securing all sub-domains of your domain name yourdomain.com, then you need to enter the Common Name as *.yourdomain.com; otherwise you will get an error while submitting your CSR.
You need to get in touch with your Web Hosting provider and request them to generate a CSR for your business after supplying them the abovementioned information. If you have bought Web Hosting for this domain name with us, then you may generate a CSR yourself from your own Control Panel. Click here to learn how you can generate a CSR for your domain name >>
Step 2. Validate your Certificate Signature Request (CSR) at thawte
Prior to enrolling for a Digital Certificate, it is recommended that you confirm that nothing is amiss with the CSR that you have generated.
Click here to validate your CSR at thawte >>
Upon submission of a valid CSR, you would be able to view its details in the Certificate Contents area (at the bottom of this page). However, if your CSR is invalid, the Certificate Contents area would appear blank and you would be displayed an error (on the top of this page).
Step 3. Submit your Organization Details, Contact Details and Certificate Details to thawte
Before a Digital Certificate can be issued to you, we need to send a request to thawte with some information about yourself and your business. Follow the process mentioned below to request your Digital Certificate:
1. Login to your Control Panel and search for the domain name for which you have ordered a Digital Certificate. Click here to find instructions to do so >>
2. Upon clicking on the order, you need to click on the Enroll Certificate button.
3. Mention the following details and click on the Enroll button
A. Organization Details
- Organization Type – Select if your business is a Sole Proprietorship, Trading As, University Department, University Administration, Government Department, Doing Business As, University Faculty, Public (Listed) Company, Private (Unlisted) Company, Registered Non Profit Organization, Non-Government Organization, Interest Group or Registered Charity.
In case you are ordering a SSL123 certificate, then you will be also prompted to select your Authorizing Contact. This indicates to thawte whether they should contact you on your Corporate Contact details or your Technical Contact Details, to authenticate your domain name before issuing the Digital Certificate.
B. Contact Details
- Corporate Contact Details – Provide your complete contact details while giving special emphasis to the email address that you mention herein. You need to either i. match the email address inserted, to one of the contact specified in your Domain Name’s Whois details. Please ensure that this information is not kept hidden for anonymity purposes.ORii. match a pre-determined email with the domain name for which you are requesting the certificate. You need to either select – admin, administrator, hostmaster, info, SSLadmin, SSLadministrator, SSLwebmaster, sysadmin, webmaster from the drop down list.
IMPORTANT
- If you have selected to match the email address inserted, to one of the contact specified in your Domain Name’s Whois details, then you have to ensure that the email address mentioned herein, matches either the Registrant Contact Email Address or the Administrative Contact Email Address.
- If Privacy Protection is enabled for the Domain Name, it needs to be disabled before submitting the Contact details to thawte.
Privacy Protection may be enabled again once the Certificate has been issued.
Click here to read how to enable/disable Privacy Protection >>
Until thawte verifies that both email addresses match, you would not be issued your Digital Certificate.
Technical Contact Details – You may either choose to mention the same details as the one provided as the Corporate Contact by selecting the available check box or mention separate information.
thawte will contact either your Corporate Contact or your Technical Contact depending upon the settings you have selected above.
C. Certificate Details
- – Select the Web Server software on which your website/domain name is hosted.
IMPORTANT
- If your website/domain name is hosted on Gossimer Windows server, you need to choose the software type as MSIIS6.
- If your website/domain name is hosted on Gossimer Linux server, you need to choose the software type as modSSL.
- Certificate Maintenance Password – You may mention a password here that will be used to maintain your certificate with thawte.
- Certificate Signature Request – This is the CSR (Public Key) you have generated for the purpose of obtaining a Digital Certificate from thawte.
Step 4. Complete the thawte Authentication formalities
After you have enrolled for a Digital Certificate, thawte would contact your Corporate / Technical Contact and request you to provide them with some documentation:
- Proof of Organizational Name
- Proof of Right to Use Domain Name
- Proof of Organizational Telephone Number
Click here to know the documentation needed by thawte before issuing you your Digital Certificate >>
IMPORTANT
- The above mentioned process is to be followed in case you have ordered a SGC SuperCert, Web Server Certificate or a Wildcard Server Certificate. In case you have ordered a SSL123 Certificate, thawte would try to automatically complete the authentication process. However, if they encounter any discrepancy, they may contact you to authenticate your request.
- If you do not complete your verification process soon, thawte may reject your Digital Certificate request and may send you an email informing you that your Digital Certificate has been “Bogused / Rejected.”However, should you subsequently complete the authentication formalities within 90 days of the Enrollment Date, thawte would issue you your Digital Certificate.
Once you have completed all these formalities, thawte will issue the certificate and email you a confirmation.
Step 5. Check the Status of your Digital Certificate and retrieve your Digital Certificate
Once you have completed the enrollment process, thawte would begin verifying the data you have submitted to them and once satisfied, issue you your Digital Certificate. You can continue checking the status of your Digital Certificate request from your Control Panel and retrieve the same from your Control Panel itself. Click here to check the status of your Digital Certificate and retrieve the same upon issue >>

You might be making changes to your website from time to time. Now, you might encounter a situation where, you make certain changes to your website but on viewing your site in a browser, you do not see the changes.
Most of the time, this is not a problem. It happens simply because you are looking at a cached page – your web browser may have cached an older version of your website, and is showing that to you. To view the most recent version, you need to clear the cache of your website, and then try again.
How do I clear the cache of Microsoft Internet Explorer?
How do I clear the cache of Microsoft Internet Explorer in my Macintosh?
How do I clear the cache in Netscape?
If you are unable to view the changes made to your site even after clearing the cache, please contact our Support team at Gossimer and inform them about it.

Indexing Service (formerly known as Index Server) is integrated with Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) and the Windows NT Server 4.0 operating system to allow web searching on corporate intranets and Internet sites.
Once enabled, it automatically builds an index of your website that can be easily searched from any web browser with the sample query forms. Indexing maps words to documents, and to locations within documents.
The same way that an index in a book maps an important word to a page inside the book, content indexing on a computer takes a word within a document and maps it back to that document.
This feature is currently not supported on Gossimer web servers.

Follow the steps detailed below to use Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0 to send/receive emails from your Email account.
1. Start Outlook Express 6.0. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.

2. In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click Add, and then click Mail.

3. In the Display name box, type the name that you want others to see when you send a message, and then click Next.

4. In the E-mail address box, type the e-mail address for the account that you are using (for example, user@yourdomainname.com), and then click Next.

5. Under E-mail Server Names, click the appropriate incoming e-mail server type (Post Office Protocol version 3 [POP3] is the default type).

6. Incase you selected POP3 as the incoming mail server in the above step, enter the Incoming mail server as pop.yourdomainname.com. If you selected IMAP as the incoming mail server, then the mail server you need to use is imap.yourdomainname.com. The SMTP server address in any case will be entered as smtp.yourdomainname.com. Once this is done, click Next.

7. Type your complete email address and password in the Account name and Password boxes respectively and then click Next.

8. The next window that you see reads “Congratulations, you have successfully entered all of the information required to set up your account. To save these settings, click Finish.

9. Now again open the Internet Accounts dialog box referring to steps 1 and 2. In the Mail view, you will see the Account you have just added. Now you need to click Properties.

10. Under the Servers tab, you need to check the checkbox My server requires authentication placed under Outgoing Mail Server. Once this is done, click Apply and close the Internet Accounts dialog box.

11. Now under Send/Receive button, click on Send and Receive All and the mails will be download and visible when you click on Inbox which is located in the List of Local Folders as shown below.

IMPORTANT
Usually, the port used for the Outgoing Mail Server/SMTP Service is 25. However, there might be a situation where your ISP might be blocking the use of port 25 for SMTP service. Many ISPs block port 25 in order to minimize the amount of spam sent using their network. If you are facing issues sending mails using the default port 25, you can confirm with your ISP whether port 25 is indeed blocked by them.
To circumvent this, Gossimer allows you to use an alternate port 2525 for sending mails if port 25 is blocked -
a. In Outlook Express, on the Tools menu, click Accounts.

b. Select the email account you wish to modify and click Properties.
c. Under the Advanced tab, replace the default port number 25 with the alternate port number 2525 in the field provided for Outgoing mail (SMTP).

d. Click OK and then Close to save the changes.

The Microsoft IIS 6.0 web server considers relative paths as a potential security hazard and therefore disables the same by default. To ensure that the server where your website is hosted can not be exploited in this fashion, Gossimer keeps relative paths disabled.
Examples
Relative Path: <img src=”../images/image.gif”>
Absolute Path: <img src=”www.yourdomain.com/images/image.gif”>
If you have designed a website in ASP which uses relative linking, then your website visitors may encounter an error message such as:
Active Server Pages, ASP 0131
Disallowed Parent Path
The Include file ‘../<filename.ext>’ cannot contain ‘..’ to indicate the parent directory.
/<path>/<filename.asp>, line <number>
OR
Server.MapPath()error ‘ASP 0175 : 80004005′ Disallowed Path Characters
You would receive such errors because you are referring to a file in a directory, which is a level above your Current Working Directory using Relative Paths or better know as Parent Paths.
To resolve this error, you have 2 options:
Option 1: Use an Absolute Path with the domain name
For every file you want to link within your ASP file, you need to mention the complete path including the domain name. For example, http://www.yourdomain.com/images/1.gif.
Option 2: Use an Absolute Virtual Path
You would need to modify your ASP scripts to use absolute virtual paths from the root of your website, instead of relative paths. For example, if you use an include file named “mycode.inc” at the root of your site, the virtual path would be “/mycode.inc.” If you use the same include file in a virtual directory named “/includes” on your server, the virtual path would be “/includes/mycode.inc” where “/” indicates the ROOT of your Website or the Web Directory.
The below example illustrates how to implement Virtual Paths in your scripts instead of Relative Paths -
<!–#include virtual=”/<virtual path>/<filename_you_wish_to_include>”–>

FrontPage Server Extensions are a set of server-side scripts and programs which enable users of Microsoft FrontPage to use its special components (called WebBots). FrontPage Server Extensions are CGI (Common Gateway Interface) programs which provide the server side implementation of FrontPage. The Extensions implement Authoring (uploading/downloading documents, To Do Lists, etc.), Administration (setting end-user, author, and administrator privileges), and Dynamic Content (browse-time WebBot components).
What are WebBots?
WebBots are the mechanism for invoking many of the interactive features built into FrontPage. These features are added to your website through the FrontPage Editor from the Insert -> Web Component menu.
