30 Jul 10 Regulations to be followed while updating contact details of specific domain names

There are certain regulations to be followed while updating contact information for certain domain names registered with Gossimer

.US domain names

The Registrant contact of every .US domain name needs to bear valid Nexus Information. The Nexus Information consists of

  • The Application Purpose: Whether the domain name being registered is for Business use (Profit/Non-profit), personal use, etc.

  • The Nexus Category: Whether the person registering the domain name is a resident/citizen of the United States of America, or the Domain name is registered for an organization based in the United States, or having an office or facility therein.

If you were to modify the Name/Company name for an existing contact of a .US domain name, the system would prompt you to specify the Nexus information for this contact.

.NAME domain names

When you register a .NAME domain name or have a .NAME domain name transferred to your account with Gossimer , you have to wait for 5 days before you can update the Registrant contact details.

24 Jul 10 How can people Contact me if I enable Privacy Protection for my domain name?

Once you enable Privacy Protection for your domain name, the Contact Details for your domain name in any Whois Lookup query would display generic details. If someone attempts to contact you at these details, this is how they will be greeted:

  • Letters, Couriers delivered at the Postal Address would not be accepted. This implies, that you will not be contactable at the address displayed in your domain name Whois.

  • Telephone Callers would be advised to email you at the email address displayed in the whois of your domain name.

  • Email sent to the email address listed in the Whois, will get a response specifying an unbranded URL, which needs to be visited by this person. Upon visiting the site, they would be able to mention their query in a secure form, while specifying the type of Contact (Registrant, Administrative, Technical, Billing) they wish to email. The contents of the submitted form will then be emailed to the selected Contact’s (Registrant, Administrative, Technical or Billing) address, as specified in your Control Panel.

Therefore, you are assured of still being contactable, even though your Contact Details are not visible in the Whois of your domain name.

22 Jul 10 Transferring your .EU Domain Name

Before proceeding with the Transfer you are advised to first go check if your Domain Name can be Transferred. Click here to check if your domain name can be transferred >>

IMPORTANT

In case of a .EU Domain Name Transfer, the Expiry date is updated to 1 year from the date of Transfer and not to 1 year from the date the domain name was set to expire prior to Transfer.

For example, if a Domain Name has the Expiry date as 24 Oct, 2007 and it gets Transferred to another Registrar on 2 Sep, 2007. The new Expiry date will be 2 Sep, 2008 and not 24 Oct, 2008.

If you wish to Transfer a .EU Domain Name to Gossimer, then you need to follow the steps mentioned below:

Transfer Process for Customers

1. Login to your Control Panel from http://manage.gossimer.biz/customer.

2. In the Control Panel go to Domains -> Domain Registration -> Transfer. There, enter the Domain Name you wish to Transfer.

3. Select the Registrant Contact for this Domain Name. You may select from the available list of contacts or Add a New Contact.

It is compulsory for you to agree to the associated Product Agreement(s) by selecting the Check Box.

4. In order to avoid any downtime for the website/emails associated with your .EU domain name during the Transfer, it is necessary to mention the Name Servers already in use by your .EU domain name. You may also provide any new Name Servers that you would like to associate your .EU domain name with. Here, it is obvious that all the necessary DNS records are already created on the new Name Servers for the website/emails to be functional.

5. You need to mention any existing Child Name Servers for your .EU domain name alongwith their respective IP Addresses. This is necessary to avoid any downtime for the website/emails associated with any domain name using these Child Name Servers as their Name Servers. If you wish to Register any new Child Name Servers, you may also mention the same alongwith the respective IP Addresses. These new Child Name Servers will be Registered once the domain name is Transferred successfully.

Child Name Servers can also be Registered separately. Click here to know how >>

6. Finally, proceed with the Payment of the Invoice. Click here to read more details on Payment >>.

Now that you have placed the Transfer Order, the Registrant Contact for the Domain Name will receive an e-mail from the Registry for the Transfer Authorization process, which needs to be approved within 7 days. The Registry provides an additional grace period of 7 days for approval, in case the Transfer was not approved within the initial 7 day period. 18 Jul 10 Modifying the Ownership Identity of a .EU Domain Name / Moving a .EU Domain Name to another Customer

The .EU domain name Contact management is quite different from other domain names. There is a restriction on modifying the Registrant Contact details in .EU domain names. Click here to familiarize yourself with the uniqueness of various .EU Contacts >>

There is a fee involved in performing either one of the following actions as it constitutes changing the Ownership Identity of a .EU domain name:

  • modifying the Company Name or Name (in the absence of a Company Name) of the Registrant Contact, or
  • moving a .EU domain name to another Customer

IMPORTANT

If you wish to simply modify the Name of the Registrant Contact (which has a Company Name associated with it) and/or other contact details of the Registrant Contact, then you need to follow another process. Click here to perform this modification >>

Follow the below mentioned process to modify the Company Name or Name (in the absence of a Company Name) of the Registrant Contact of a .EU domain name:

1. Login to your Control Panel and search for the domain name. Click here to find instructions for doing so >>

2. Click on the Domain name in the search results to get to the Order details view.

3. Click on the Modify Company button.

4. At the time of modifying the Company Name or Registrant Name (in the absence of a Company Name) of your .EU domain name, you have two options -

  • You may choose a different Registrant Contact from the list of Registrant Contacts or create an altogether new .EU Registrant Contact by clicking on the Add Eu Registrant Contact link and filling in the details in the form presented.

  • You may move/transfer this Domain Name to another Customer by providing the new Customer ID and Customer Username. After providing these details, click on Proceed button to continue the process.

5. There is a fee involved for performing either of the above mentioned two options and you need to pay for the generated Invoice to complete the ownership modification. Click here for more details on the Payment process >>.

IMPORTANT

It should be noted that modifying the Registrant Company Name or Registrant Name (in the absence of a Company Name) of a .EU Domain Name or moving a .EU Domain Name to another Customer, will Renew the Domain Name for a year from the date of paying for the associated Invoice.

For example, if a .EU Domain Name is Expiring on 30 Oct, 2007 and you modify its Company Name or Registrant Name (in the absence of a Company Name) on 31 Aug, 2007, the Domain Name will be Renewed and the new Expiry date will be 31 Aug, 2008. Of course, there will be charge associated for this Renewal.

Once the process starts, both the Current as well as the New Registrant Contact for the Domain Name will receive an e-mail from the Registry for the Authorization process, which needs to be approved within 7 days. The Registry provides an additional grace period of 7 days for approval, in case the approvals were not received within the initial 7 day period. The authorization can also be provided through a fax to the Registry, from both the Current as well as the New Registrant Contact. Templates of the confirmation fax are provided below:

Current Registrant confirmation fax >>
New Registrant confirmation fax >>

The request is processed once the Registry receives approval from both the Current and the New Registrant.

18 Jul 10 Changing Name Servers of your Domain Name

In order to host a website on your domain name, you will need to obtain the Name Servers from the Web Hosting Company with whom you wish to host your website and point your domain name to these Name Servers.

Follow the steps below to associate Name Servers with your domain name  -

  1. Contact your Web Hosting Company and find out from them the Name Servers you need to use.  If you have bought Web Hosting for your domain name through Gossimer, then you need to set the Name Servers as specified by Gossimer. Click here to know how you can view this information >>

  2. Login to your Control Panel, search for the domain name for which you want to add/modify Name Servers and proceed to the Order Details view. Click here to read how >>

  3.

  4. Click on the Modify Name Server button. Feed in the Name Servers you want (up to 13* Name Servers) and click Submit. If at this step you get an error stating Name Server is not yet registered, then this implies that the Name Server(s) you are submitting has/have not been registered with the Registry. Please contact your Web Hosting Company and ask them to provide Name Servers that are valid and registered with the Registry.

IMPORTANT

  • If the domain name is Locked, you will have to first Unlock this domain name before adding/modifying Name Servers. Click here to read how >>

  •

  • *.UK domain names support only upto 10 Name Servers. Therefore, you cannot add more than 10 Name Servers for your .UK domain name.

  • *.EU domain names support only upto 9 Name Servers. Therefore, you cannot add more than 9 Name Servers for your .EU domain name.

  • Upon modifying your domain name’s Name Servers, your website would begin appearing in a web browser, after about 24 to 48 hours (provided your Web Hosting package is properly setup and you have uploaded the content of your website). This is a standard time-frame required for a process called as DNS Propagation to complete Worldwide. This process is not controlled by any one ISP/company and therefore it can not be hastened.

  •

  • If you wish to modify/delete a Name Server of a .EU/.UK domain name, which appears to be the Child Name Server of the same .EU/.UK domain name, then you can not do so from this interface. This action is only possible from the Manage Child Name Server interface. Click here to know more about Child Name Servers and how to Modify/Delete one >>ExampleIf you wish to modify/delete the Name Server ns1.yourdomainname.eu of yourdomainname.eu or ns1.yourdomainname.uk of yourdomainname.uk, then you will not be able to do so from this interface. This action is permissible from the Manage Child Name Server interface only.

17 Jul 10 What is Redemption Grace Period and how to get a Domain Name (Except .UK, .WS and .NAME) back from it (Restoring a Domain Name in Pending Delete Restorable Status)

Once a domain name is deleted, the domain name (except a .UK, .WS and .NAME domain name) would slip into the Redemption Period ONLY under the following circumstances:

  • manual deletion of domain name by contacting Gossimer Technical Support

  • System deletion of domain name post Expiry of the Renewal Grace Period and the domain name does not have any backorder against it.

In all other cases, a deleted domain name cannot be Renewed/Restored/Redeemed. Click here to find information about our Renewal Grace Period and Domain Name Deletion Policy >>

Redeeming a domain name is costly, time consuming and generally a manual process. The Redemption Period is of 30* days (for most domain name extensions) after the domain name is deleted and during this period, only the current Registrar of the domain name can Redeem the domain name.

If the domain name is not Redeemed during this period, then it would move to the Pending Delete period for 5 days. In this status, the domain name can not be Redeemed and after this period, the domain name would be available for fresh Registration.

IMPORTANT

* The Redemption Grace Period is different for some domain name extensions as stated below:

  • The Redemption Period for a .EU domain name is 40 days. Moreover, the .EU Registry does not have a Pending Delete period. The domain name will be available for fresh Registration after 40 days from the date of Deletion.

  • Any website/emails associated with a .UK domain name will stop resolving once the domain name Expires. You may Renew your .UK domain name anytime from 6 months before its Expiry, upto 97 days after its Expiry. If you do not Renew your .UK domain name within 97 days after its Expiry, it would be automatically Deleted by the Registry. It is important to note that there is no concept of a Redemption Grace Period in case of a .UK domain name.

  • Third Level .COM/.NET/.ORG domain names under the extensions -.EU.COM, .GB.COM, .AE.ORG, .KR.COM, .US.COM, .QC.COM, .DE.COM, .GB.NET, .NO.COM, .HU.COM, .JPN.COM, .UY.COM, .ZA.COM, .BR.COM,
    .CN.COM, .SA.COM, .SE.COM, .SE.NET, .UK.COM, .UK.NET, .RU.COM

will have a Redemption Grace Period of 45 days.

  • A .WS domain name will not be placed under Redemption Grace Period by the Registry upon Deletion. It will be made available for fresh Registration post Deletion. Hence, there is no possibility of Redeeming a .WS domain name.

  • A .NAME domain name will not be placed under Redemption Grace Period by the Registry upon Deletion. It will be made available for fresh Registration post a Pending Delete period of 5 days, during which the domain name cannot be Redeemed.

Procedure for Restoring any Domain Name in Redemption Grace Period (Pending Delete Restorable Status)

1. Login to your Control Panel, search for the domain name you wish to Redeem and proceed to the Order Details view. Click here to know how to do so >>

2. For a domain name under the Redemption Period, you will find a Restore button. You can then move ahead with Redeeming the domain name, by paying for the Invoice so generated. Click here for more details on payment >>

Kindly note that Redemption of a domain name is a lengthy process and hence it would take Gossimer upto 5 working days to Redeem a domain name.

IMPORTANT

  • A Restoration action, once completed, cannot be reversed. The only option would be deleting the domain name, in case the same is no longer required. Click here to know how a domain name can be deleted >>

  • Redemption of a domain name** (only after deletion by Gossimer System post Expiry of the Renewal Grace Period) includes 1 year Renewal.

  • ** Redemption of a .EU domain name will always include one year Renewal. However, Renewal will extend the term from the date on which the domain name is Redeemed and not from the Expiry date existing when the domain name was deleted.

Once you have started using the Domain forwarding service, you need to take the following steps to start using it:

A. Change the Name servers of your Domain name to our Name servers.

OR

Create an A record for your Domain name pointing to the IP address of the Domain forwarding server

B

14 Jul 10 Domain name transfer completed, but domain name is still Inactive

There are instances where a domain name is successfully transferred to Gossimer, but the domain name still continues to bear the status Inactive in the Control Panel. This happens because -

When a domain name transfer completes, the Registry makes the necessary modifications to the domain name, and adds 1 year to its Registration period. Now, the registry notifies us about successful transfers by means of a daily report, on receipt of which the system sets all successfully transferred domain names active in the database.

If for some reason, there is a delay in delivery of the report, the domain name cannot automatically be set active in the system. As such, it continues to remain inactive. This problem would normally be rectified within 24-48 hours. However, if the problem still persists more than 48 hours later, please inform our support team about this, at support@gossimer.com

14 Jul 10 What is Domain (Transfer) Secret or Authorization (Auth.) Code and how you can obtain it from your Current Registrar?

A Domain (Transfer) Secret or Authorization Code is a code assigned by the Registrar at the time the domain name was registered. This Auth Code acts like a password for a domain name. Domain (Transfer) Secret is an extra security measure, ensuring that only the owner of the domain can transfer their domain name.

To transfer any domain name of any of the following extensions, you would require to first obtain the Domain (Transfer) Secret or Auth. Code from your current Registrar:

  • .com
  • .net
  • .org
  • .info
  • .biz
  • .us
  • .in (along with any third level .in domain like .co.in)
  • .name
  • .bz
  • .mn
  • .mobi
  • .cc (not compulsory)
  • .tv (not compulsory)
  • .coop

Ideally, your domain name’s Domain (Transfer) Secret or Auth. Code should be available within the Domain Name Management Interface provided by your Registrar. In the event that you are not able to locate your Domain (Transfer) Secret or Auth. Code, you need to contact the Support Team of your current Registrar, to obtain the same.

14 Jul 10 Domain Name Deletion

A domain name may be Deleted from our database by 2 methods, explained below -

I. System Deletion

Once a domain name has Expired, it will go to into Renewal Grace Period, where you can Renew this domain name at normal costs. This Renewal Grace Period would be for 40* days (for most domain name extensions). If you do not Renew the domain name in the Renewal Grace Period, then the domain name would be Deleted and the domain name (except a .UK, .WS and .NAME domain name) will go into Redemption Grace Period.

However, should there be no back-order for the domain name, you would still have the option to Redeem it.

Click here to understand what Redemption Grace Period implies and how you can restore your domain name (except .UK, .WS and .NAME) from this status >>

IMPORTANT

  1. The concept of Renewal Grace Period for a .EU domain name is slightly different. Every .EU domain name will Expire exactly 1 year from the date of Registration (since the maximum length of registration is only a year). However, the Renewal Grace Period will be only till the the second last day of the expiring month (penultimate day of the month), post which the domain name will be deleted. Thus, different .EU domain names may have different Renewal Grace Periods. Lets take a couple of examples to demonstrate this -

    1. abc.eu gets Registered on 24 Jul, 2006. This domain name will Expire on 24 Jul, 2007. If the domain name is not Renewed until the Deletion date, it will be Deleted from our System on 30 Jul, 2007 (since this is the second last day of the expiring month). This domain name will have a Renewal Grace period of 6 days. It will slip into Redemption Grace Period after 31 Jul, 2007.

    2. pqr.eu gets Registered on 27 Jul, 2006. This domain name will Expire on 27 Jul, 2007. If the domain name is not Renewed until the Deletion date, it will be Deleted from our System on 30 Jul, 2007 (since this is the second last day of the expiring month). This domain name will have a Renewal Grace period of 3 days. It will slip into Redemption Grace Period post 31 Jul, 2007.

    3. xyz.eu gets Registered on 31 Jul, 2006 and will Expire on 31 Jul, 2007. If the domain name is not Renewed until the Deletion date, it will be Deleted from our System on 30 Jul, 2007 (since this is the second last day of the expiring month) and will not have any Renewal Grace Period. It will slip into Redemption Grace Period post 31 Jul, 2007.

  2. .INFO domain names will have a 15 day Renewal Grace Period. If you do not Renew the domain name in the Renewal Grace Period, then the domain name would be Deleted and the domain name will go into Redemption Grace Period.

  3. Renewal Grace Period in a .UK domain name is quite different from other extensions. Any website/emails associated with the domain name will stop resolving once your .UK domain name Expires.

You may Renew your .UK domain name anytime from 6 months before its Expiry, upto 97 days after its expiry. If you do not Renew your domain name within 97 days after its Expiry, it would be automatically Deleted by the Registry.

It is important to note that there is no concept of a Redemption Grace Period in case of a .UK domain name.

  4. A .WS domain name will have a Renewal Grace Period of 30 days. If you do not Renew the domain name in the Renewal Grace Period, then the domain name would be Deleted and made available for Registration as a fresh domain name by the Registry.

  5. Third Level .COM/.NET/.ORG domain names under the extensions -.EU.COM, .GB.COM, .AE.ORG, .KR.COM, .US.COM, .QC.COM, .DE.COM, .GB.NET, .NO.COM, .HU.COM, .JPN.COM, .UY.COM, .ZA.COM, .BR.COM, .CN.COM,
    .SA.COM, .SE.COM, .SE.NET, .UK.COM, .UK.NET, .RU.COM

will have a Renewal Grace Period of 5 days. If you do not Renew the domain name in the Renewal Grace Period, then the domain name would be Deleted and the domain name will go into Redemption Grace Period.

  6. A .NAME domain name will have a Renewal Grace Period of 40 days. If you do not Renew the domain name in the Renewal Grace Period, then the domain name would be Deleted and made available for Registration as a fresh domain name by the Registry post a Pending Delete period of 5 days, during which the domain name cannot be Redeemed.
  7.

II. Manual Deletion

If you already have a domain name Registered, you can delete it from your Control Panel within 4 days of Registration. This 4 day period in case of domain names is referred as the Money Back Period. Deleting a domain name will immediately stop all functionalities (like the Website and Mails) associated with the domain name. Also, a domain name explicitly deleted would entitle you to a Refund of the entire amount, and there would be a charge of USD 1.0 for the Deletion.

IMPORTANT

  • Domain names under the following extensions cannot be Deleted from within the Control Panel since they do not have a Money Back Period.

    .EU, .UK, .WS, .EU.COM, .GB.COM, .AE.ORG, .KR.COM, .US.COM, .QC.COM, .DE.COM, .GB.NET, .NO.COM, .HU.COM, .JPN.COM, .UY.COM, .ZA.COM,
    .BR.COM, .CN.COM, .SA.COM, .SE.COM, .SE.NET, .UK.COM, .UK.NET, .RU.COM

If you still wish to have such a domain name Deleted without Refund, you need to get in touch with us at support@gossimer.com and request the same.

  • A domain name deleted in the Money Back Period does not slip into Redemption Grace Period and is immediately available for registration.

1. Login to your Control Panel and search for the domain name that you wish to delete. Click here to read how >>

Once you have started using the Managed DNS service, you need to take the following steps to start using it:

A. Change the Name servers of your Domain name to our Name servers.

08 Jul 10 Modifying the Whois / Contact Details of all Domain Names (except .EU and .UK)

We offer you a comprehensive set of features to allow you to manage your Domain Name Contact details easily. All Domain Names (except .EU) have four Contacts associated with them. The Registrant (which is the owner of the Domain Name), the Administrative Contact, the Technical Contact and the Billing Contact.

In our system, Contacts are separate from a Domain Name. We maintain a separate database of ALL Contact information that you have used for registering any Domain Name, separately in a Contact database. This allows you to re-use the Contact information for any other Domain Name registration without having to fill in all the values yourself.

All Domain Names have 4 associated Contacts with them. Think of this as linking Contacts from your Contact database to the Domain Names you Register. Whenever you change any Contact information in any Contact, it will automatically change that information in every Domain Name which uses that Contact information.

If you need to Modify your Contact Information for a Domain Name, simply follow the steps below -

  1. Login to your Control Panel and search for the domain name. Click here to find instructions for doing so >>

  2. Click on the Domain name in the search results to get to the Order details view.

  3. Click on the Modify Contact Details button.

  4. You now have two options of modifying the Contact Details for your Domain Name -

(i) Use your existing Contact Database: You will be shown 4 dropdowns in this option. These dropdowns will be populated with all the Contacts that this particular Customer has used in all Domain Registrations with us. You will be able to select the Contact you wish to apply for your Domain Name from this dropdown list.

(ii) Specify Contact Details: You will be able to separately modify the Contact information for the Domain Name by directly specifying it in the Text boxes. If you change the Name or Company Name, you would be asked, if you wish to change this particular Contact only or you want to reflect this change to all the Contacts that are using this. If you change any other details, then they would automatically be applied to the all the Contacts that are using this.

Thus, for example, if you are using the following Contact Details for only a particular Domain Name and NOT anywhere else –

Registrant Contact Details
Company :* My Company
Name:* My Name
Email Address :* myself@mydomain.com
Address1 :* My Address
Address2 :
Address3 :
City :* My City
State :
Country :* United States of America
Zip :* 12343
Tel No. (Country Code – Phone Number) :*1 254146246

Fax no. :

Admin Contact Details
Company :* My Company
Name:* My Name
Email Address :* myself@mydomain.com
Address1 :* My Address
Address2 :
Address3 :

Tel No. (Country Code – Phone Number) :*1 254146246

Tel No. (Country Code – Phone Number) :*1 254146246

Fax no. :

Now, if you change the Name or Company Name or both for a Contact, you would be asked whether you wish to make the change for all the Contacts (Registrant, Billing, Admin & Technical) or simply change that particular Contact, and also if you wish to implement this change for all domains using this Contact.

On the other hand, if you change any other details, then all the Registrant, Admin and Technical Contact would be changed automatically for all domain names under that Customer using that particular Contact.

Apart from the above process, Contacts can be created and managed independent of the Domain Name(s), directly from within the Customer Control Panel. Click here to read how >>

02 Jul 10 Locating and Modifying the Domain (Transfer) Secret/Authorization Code for your Domain Name (except .EU, .UK, .CC, .TV and .WS)

All domain names (except a .EU, .UK, .CC, .TV and .WS domain name) have a Domain (Transfer) Secret Key/Authorization Code associated with them. This would be required if you want to have such a domain name Transferred. Gossimer provides you with the unique facility of modifying your Domain (Transfer) Secret for each domain name. You can thus have a Domain (Transfer) Secret of your choice for each domain name.

This can be fulfilled by the following simple steps -

  1. Login to your Control Panel and search for the domain name whose transfer secret you wish to modify. Click here to know how >>

  2. Click on the domain name in the search results to get to the Order details view.

  3. The Domain Secret field in the Order Information part will have a link to view your Domain Secret over a secure connection. Clicking this link will open a new window where the current Domain (Transfer) Secret will be displayed. To Modify the Domain (Transfer) Secret, click on the Modify Domain Secret button in the Domain Registration toolbar of the Order details view page. In the resulting page, provide a Domain (Transfer) Secret of your choice in the New Domain Secret textbox and click on Continue to save the change.
  4.

IMPORTANT

  1. In case of a .COM/.NET domain name, the Domain Secret field may have a link to set a Domain (Transfer) Secret (instead of a link to view the current Domain (Transfer) Secret) which can be used as mentioned below:

    1. Click on the Click here to create Domain Secret link in the Domain Secret field.

    2. In the next page, provide a Domain (Transfer) Secret of your choice in the New Domain Secret textbox and click Continue to save the change.

  2.

  3. Once a domain name having an associated Domain (Transfer) Secret is Transferred to Gossimer from another Registrar, our System would set a new Domain (Transfer) Secret for such a domain name. This process is implemented from a security perspective.
