01 Sep 10 Registering and Managing Child Name Servers

Child Name Servers are Name Servers which are registered with the Registry under your domain name. You have to register Name servers with the Registry, before you can use them as Name Servers for registering domain names. Child Name Servers can be registered only by the owner of the domain name under which they are registered. For instance, a Child Name Server ns2.xyz.com can only be registered by the Owner of xyz.com.

Managing Child Name Servers

  1. Login to your Control Panel, search for the domain name and proceed to the Order Details view. Click here to read how >>

  2. Click on the Manage Child Name Server button.

Here, you can:

Add a Child Name Server

Enter the Host Name of the Child Name Server you wish to add in the Host Name box, key in its IP Address and click on Submit.

For example, for yourdomainname.com, you may use the Host Name as “ns1″ and IP Address as “111.222.333.444″.

IMPORTANT

  1. A domain name can have any* number of Child Name Servers associated with it.

  2. Each Child Name Server (except for .EU and .UK domain names) can have upto 13 unique IP Addresses associated with it. For example, you can Registrar a Child Name Server with the Host Name “ns1″ and associate upto 13 unique IP Addresses with this Host Name.In case of .EU domain names, each Child Name Server can have upto 9 unique IP Addresses associated with it. For example, you can Registrar a Child Name Server with the Host Name “ns1″ for yourdomainname.eu and associate upto 9 unique IP Addresses with this Host Name.

In case of .UK domain names, each Child Name Server can have only a single unique IP Address associated with it. For example, you can Registrar a Child Name Server with the Host Name “ns1″ for yourdomainname.uk and associate only a single unique IP Address with this Host Name.

  3. Registering a Child Name Server as mentioned above is just the first step. The Child Name Server needs to be registered at the Registry to only serve as a non-authoritative Record should your Child Name Server not be resolvable in some extreme condition. This Name Server would start working only after you have added an Address (A) Record or Canonical (CNAME) Record for this Name Server within the Zone for the domain name (of this Child Name Server) at your own DNS Server, thus binding the NS to the IP Address.

    Examples

    i. If you are running your own DNS Servers, then you would need to add a Zone for the domain name yourdomainname.com and create an A Record like

    ns1.yourdomainname.com. 38400 IN A 111.222.333.444

ii. If you wish to simply point your Name Servers to another Name Servers, then you may do so either way -

    1. you may either add a CNAME Record to your Service Provider’s Name Server, after buying Managed DNS service through them -

      ns1.yourdomainname.com. 38400 IN CNAME ns1.serviceprovider.com,

      or

    2. you may add an Address Record to your Service Provider’s Name Server IP Address, after buying Managed DNS service through them -ns1.yourdomainname.com. 38400 IN A 777.888.999.000
  4. *In case of .EU domain names, all Child Name Servers that you create/add, are automatically associated with that .EU domain name as a Name Server. Due to this limitation, you will only be able to add upto 9 Child Name Servers for .EU domain names (Note: The maximum number of Name Servers that can be associated with any .EU domain name is 9). If you have already added other Name Servers (not Child Name Servers of this .EU domain name), then the number of Child Name Servers that you can create would reduce by that many. Click here to know more about Name Servers >>Example

    i. yourdomainname.eu

Child Name Servers created – ns1.yourdomainname.eu and ns2.yourdomainname.eu
Thus, Name Servers automatically added for this domain name – ns1.yourdomainname.eu and ns2.yourdomainname.eu

    ii. yourotherdomainname.eu

    Name Servers used – ns1.hostingprovider.com, ns2.hostingprovider.com
    Child Name Servers created – ns1.yourotherdomainname.eu, ns2.yourotherdomainname.eu
Thus, Name Servers automatically added for this domain name – ns1.yourotherdomainname.eu, ns2.yourotherdomainname.eu

    So in all 4 Name Servers will be associated with yourotherdomainname.eu – ns1.hostingprovider.com, ns2.hostingprovider.com, ns1.yourotherdomainname.eu, ns2.yourotherdomainname.eu

This means that now for the domain name yourotherdomainname.eu, you can only add upto 5 other Child Name Servers or Name Servers since every time you create a Child Name Server, it gets automatically associated with the .EU domain name as a Name Server.

  5. *In case of .UK domain names, all Child Name Servers that you create/add, are automatically associated with that .UK domain name as a Name Server. Due to this limitation, you will only be able to add upto 10 Child Name Servers for .UK domain names (Note: The maximum number of Name Servers that can be associated with any .UK domain name is 10). If you have already added other Name Servers (not Child Name Servers of this .UK domain name), then the number of Child Name Servers that you can create would reduce by that many. Click here to know more about Name Servers >>

    Example

    i. yourdomainname.uk

Child Name Servers created – ns1.yourdomainname.uk and ns2.yourdomainname.uk
Thus, Name Servers automatically added for this domain name – ns1.yourdomainname.uk and ns2.yourdomainname.uk

    ii. yourotherdomainname.uk

    Name Servers used – ns1.hostingprovider.com, ns2.hostingprovider.com
    Child Name Servers created – ns1.yourotherdomainname.uk, ns2.yourotherdomainname.uk
Thus, Name Servers automatically added for this domain name – ns1.yourotherdomainname.uk, ns2.yourotherdomainname.uk

    So in all 4 Name Servers will be associated with yourotherdomainname.uk – ns1.hostingprovider.com, ns2.hostingprovider.com, ns1.yourotherdomainname.uk, ns2.yourotherdomainname.uk

This means that now for the domain name yourotherdomainname.uk, you can only add upto 6 other Child Name Servers or Name Servers since every time you create a Child Name Server, it gets automatically associated with the .UK domain name as a Name Server.

  6.

Modifying a Child Name Server

Modifying the Hostname – Make the modifications in the Host Name textbox and click on the Modify Host Name button.
Modifying the IP Address – Make the modifications in the IP Address textbox and click on the Modify IP Address button.

Deleting a Child Name Server

Click on the Red Cross button.

IMPORTANT

You may get an error while Deleting a Child Name Server if this is being used by another domain name of the same extension as a Name Server.

For Example,

If the Child Name Server ns1.yourdomainname.com is being used by xyz.com as its Name Server, then you will not be able to delete ns1.yourdomainname.com until xyz.com modifies its Name Server (to some other Name Server).

However, if xyz.info was using ns1.yourdomainname.com as its Name Server, then you would not face any issue while deleting your Child Name Server - ns1.yourdomainname.com.

Registrant Contact – This contact represents the owner of the domain name.

  2. General Contacts used for other domain name extensions (TLDs) can not be used for a .UK domain name. A .UK domain name has a separate Contacts database.

  3.

Modifying the Registrant Contact Details (except Company Name) of a .UK domain name

  2. Go to Domains -> Domain Registration -> Bulk Actions -> Bulk Registration

  3. Enter values in their respective fields as explained below and proceed.

    • Domain Information: Enter one or more domain names in the format requested. This process by-passes the Domain Check Availability process and the system will attempt to register these names for you, proximately.

    • Registration Term: Select the number of years you want to register this/these domain name(s) for.

    • Contact Information: Select the appropriate Registrant, Administrative, Technical and Billing Contacts from the drop-down lists, for whom the domain names will be registered.

    • Name Server Information: Mention valid Name Servers for these domain names. Name Servers are COMPULSORY for all Top Level Domains EXCEPT .COM/.NET domains.

You may choose to enable Privacy Protection for all the domain names. Click here to read what is Privacy Protection >>

It is compulsory for you to agree to the associated Product Agreement(s) by selecting the Check Box.

IMPORTANT

  1. In case you are registering .US domain names, then for every unique Contact that you have selected as the Registrant, Administrative, Technical and Billing Contact, you need to mention their Nexus Category and Application Purpose. This can be accomplished by following the underlying process:

    a. Login to your Control Panel, from http://manage.gossimer.biz/customer
    b. Search for the contact in question, from Domains -> Domain Registration -> Contact Management -> Search.

Ensure that you have sufficient funds in your Debit Account before placing a Bulk Registration order from My Billing -> Summary. You can add more funds from My Billing -> Add Funds before placing a Bulk Registration order. For example, if you place a bulk registration for 10 domain names out of which say 5 are .com domain names, 3 are .biz domain names and 2 are .info domain names and you have funds only to register 6, then the system would register the domain names from larger batches – 5 .com domain names and 1 of the .biz names and fail the rest.

  3. When the Order is executed successfully, you will receive a confirmation for the same via an e-mail from Gossimer and the locked funds will be deducted accordingly from your Debit Account. Alternatively, if the Order fails, you will receive a notification from Gossimer and the locked funds would be released back into your Debit Account.

  4. At any point of time, you can add upto two Bulk orders. This implies that you would not be able to add another Bulk Registration / Renewal / Transfer / Modification request, if two Bulk Actions are already running . You will be able to add another Bulk request once the earlier request has been processed completely. It is compulsory for you to agree to the associated Product Agreement(s) by selecting the Check Box.

  5. Decide how you wish to Pay for the Registration of the Orders by selecting one of the Payment Options mentioned below and then click on the Continue button to execute the Registration

    • Option 1 – Register the Orders and the Invoices will be kept Pending for the Customer. This way, he can pay for the Invoices later.

    • Option 2 – Register the domain names using the Current Debit Account Balance of the Customer. This option would immediately debit your Customer’s Debit Account for the Cost of the Registrations. 18 Aug 10 Changing Name Servers of your Domain Name

In order to host a website on your domain name, you will need to obtain the Name Servers from the Web Hosting Company with whom you wish to host your website and point your domain name to these Name Servers.

Follow the steps below to associate Name Servers with your domain name  -

  1. Contact your Web Hosting Company and find out from them the Name Servers you need to use.  If you have bought Web Hosting for your domain name through Gossimer, then you need to set the Name Servers as specified by Gossimer. Click here to know how you can view this information >>

  2. Login to your Control Panel, search for the domain name for which you want to add/modify Name Servers and proceed to the Order Details view. Click here to read how >>

  3.

  4. Click on the Modify Name Server button. Feed in the Name Servers you want (up to 13* Name Servers) and click Submit. If at this step you get an error stating Name Server is not yet registered, then this implies that the Name Server(s) you are submitting has/have not been registered with the Registry. Please contact your Web Hosting Company and ask them to provide Name Servers that are valid and registered with the Registry.

IMPORTANT

  • If the domain name is Locked, you will have to first Unlock this domain name before adding/modifying Name Servers. Click here to read how >>

  •

  • *.UK domain names support only upto 10 Name Servers. Therefore, you cannot add more than 10 Name Servers for your .UK domain name.

  • *.EU domain names support only upto 9 Name Servers. Therefore, you cannot add more than 9 Name Servers for your .EU domain name.

  • Upon modifying your domain name’s Name Servers, your website would begin appearing in a web browser, after about 24 to 48 hours (provided your Web Hosting package is properly setup and you have uploaded the content of your website). This is a standard time-frame required for a process called as DNS Propagation to complete Worldwide. This process is not controlled by any one ISP/company and therefore it can not be hastened.

  •

  • If you wish to modify/delete a Name Server of a .EU/.UK domain name, which appears to be the Child Name Server of the same .EU/.UK domain name, then you can not do so from this interface. This action is only possible from the Manage Child Name Server interface. Click here to know more about Child Name Servers and how to Modify/Delete one >>ExampleIf you wish to modify/delete the Name Server ns1.yourdomainname.eu of yourdomainname.eu or ns1.yourdomainname.uk of yourdomainname.uk, then you will not be able to do so from this interface. This action is permissible from the Manage Child Name Server interface only.

13 Aug 10 Transferring your .UK Domain Name

Before proceeding with the Transfer of your .UK Domain Name, you are advised to first confirm if your Domain Name can be Transferred. Click here to read more >>

IMPORTANT

  1. Inter-Registrar Transfer of a .UK Domain Name does not include one year Renewal.

  2. Transfer of a .UK Domain Name from another Registrar to Gossimer is a non-billable action.

The process of Transferring a .UK Domain Name from another Registrar is slightly different compared to the process for Domain Names under other extensions. In case of a .UK Domain Name, the inbound Transfer needs to be initiated at the Current Registrar’s end.

Once you have determined whether your .UK Domain Name can be Transferred, you need to follow the process mentioned below:

  1. Initiate the Transfer at the Current Registrar with whom you are managing your .UK Domain Name.

You need to provide a Tag in order to initiate the Transfer. Contact our Technical Support Team at support@gossimer.com to know the Tag.

  2. A notification will be sent to the Registrant Email Address once Gossimer receives a notification about the Transfer from the .UK Registry.

  3. This email will contain a Security Key associated with the Domain Name that you have Transferred.

    IMPORTANT

  4. Login to your Control Panel – Customers – http://manage.gossimer.biz/customer
    Resellers – http://manage.gossimer.biz/reseller

  5. In the Control Panel, Customers – go to Domains -> Domain Registration -> Transfer
    Resellers – go to Products -> Domain Registration -> Transfer<#end reseller#>

Now, enter your .UK Domain Name. You also need to provide the Security Key, which was sent to the Registrant Email Address.

    IMPORTANT

Here, you will be initiating the final step related to the Transfer of your .UK Domain Name to Gossimer and not a fresh Transfer.

On the next page, you need to provide the Customer Username (Email Address) under whom the Domain Name needs to be placed.

  6. Submit the details.

You will receive a notification via email from Gossimer, once the Domain Name has been activated under your Control Panel.
